Criminal Record Certificate from Italy | Obtain Italian Police Clearance Remotely
An Italian Police Clearance Certificate may be requested when a person previously lived, worked or studied in Italy. Quite often, this requirement appears only after the applicant has moved to another country.
Returning to Italy is not necessarily part of the process.
There is another point to clarify first: what does the foreign organization mean when it asks for “police clearance”? Italian judicial records have their own official names, while institutions abroad may use broader terms such as criminal record certificate from Italy, Italy PCC, Italian police certificate or criminal record check.
We help applicants abroad identify which record fits the request, coordinate the procedure in Italy and prepare the resulting document for international use.
Italian Police Clearance Certificate: Which Record Is Required?
Your checklist may contain a simple instruction:
“Provide a Police Clearance Certificate from Italy.”
The wording makes sense internationally. In Italy, however, it does not identify one document by its official Italian name.
You may also encounter:
-
Italy PCC;
-
Italian criminal record;
-
Police Certificate Italy;
-
Criminal background record from Italy;
-
Italian criminal record check.
These phrases describe a general requirement, but the Italian certificate behind that requirement can differ from one case to another.
We look at the wording provided by the immigration authority, employer, licensing body or other institution before deciding which record should be requested.
Certificato del Casellario Giudiziale
One of the main documents to know is the Certificato del Casellario Giudiziale.
It comes from the Italian judicial records system. The Ufficio del Casellario Giudiziale operates at the Procura della Repubblica, and a Casellario certificate can be requested through a judicial records office according to the applicable Italian procedure.
This explains an important difference in terminology.
A foreign institution may call the document an Italian Police Clearance Certificate, but the Italian procedure itself concerns a judicial record. It is not simply a police certificate collected from a local police station.
So the name used abroad needs to be connected with the actual record available under the Italian system.
Certificato dei Carichi Pendenti
Another document that can appear in this context is the Certificato dei Carichi Pendenti.
It is not another name for the Certificato del Casellario Giudiziale.
The Carichi Pendenti certificate concerns certain pending criminal proceedings, and the rules governing where it is requested differ from those for the Casellario certificate. Territorial jurisdiction can be relevant to this procedure.
We do not order both records as a routine step.
Instead, we first establish what information the receiving institution is looking for.
Italian Criminal Record Certificate After Leaving Italy
You may still be asked for an Italian criminal record after moving to another country.
This can be linked to an earlier period when you:
-
Lived in Italy;
-
Held Italian residence;
-
Worked there;
-
Studied there;
-
Spent an extended period in the country.
As a result, an Italian criminal record certificate may become part of an immigration, citizenship, employment or other application even years after you have left Italy.
Italian procedures also provide for requests made by people who currently reside abroad.
Living outside Italy does not prevent you from dealing with the certificate request.
Documents and Information Required
You do not need to determine the correct Italian procedure before contacting us.
To begin the review, we normally need:
-
Name and surname;
-
Date and place of birth;
-
Identification document;
-
Current country of residence;
-
Details of your previous connection with Italy;
-
Country where the certificate will be used;
-
Purpose for which it has been requested.
If available, also provide the exact requirement issued by the receiving organization.
A screenshot or extract from an immigration, citizenship, employment or licensing checklist can be particularly useful. It helps show whether the institution expects the standard Italian judicial record or a different certificate.
Where Is an Italian Criminal Record Certificate Issued?
The English expression police clearance can be misleading here.
The Certificato del Casellario Giudiziale is issued through the judicial records system connected with a Procura della Repubblica.
Italian procedure permits the request to be submitted by the person concerned or, subject to the applicable requirements, by another authorized person. Requests from applicants residing abroad are also possible.
The certificate is generally issued in Italian. This becomes important if it will later be presented to an authority working in another language.
Preparing an Italian Police Clearance Certificate for Use Abroad
Obtaining the Italian certificate is one part of the process. Making it suitable for its destination can be another.
The completed original might require:
-
No further formalities;
-
An apostille;
-
Translation;
-
Notarial preparation;
-
Several of these steps together.
Which option applies depends on the country of destination and the rules of the institution receiving the document.
We check those requirements before adding further processing to the Italian criminal record.
Apostille for an Italian Criminal Record Certificate
For international use, an Italian public document may need an apostille if the applicable Hague Apostille framework covers the destination and the receiving authority requires it.
An apostille authenticates official elements such as the signature, the signer’s capacity and, where applicable, the seal or stamp appearing on the document.
It does not validate the factual content recorded in the criminal record.
The destination and intended use therefore need to be considered before apostille processing is arranged.
Translation of an Italian Criminal Record Certificate
Because the certificate is generally issued in Italian, a translation may be needed for presentation abroad.
Requirements vary. The receiving institution might ask for:
-
Certified translation;
-
Notarized translation;
-
Another specified translation format;
-
No translation.
Translation and apostille are separate procedures and address different requirements.
We arrange the translation in the format requested by the authority or organization receiving the certificate.
Italian Police Clearance Certificate Without an In-Person Visit
If your application requires an Italian Police Clearance Certificate, Italy PCC, criminal record certificate from Italy or Certificato del Casellario Giudiziale, you can start by showing us the requirement you received.
We examine the foreign organization’s wording, establish which Italian judicial record is relevant and coordinate the corresponding procedure in Italy.
Our assistance may include:
-
Checking the requirement issued by the receiving institution;
-
Determining which Italian judicial record is needed;
-
Preparing documentation for the request;
-
Coordinating the procedure in Italy;
-
Arranging an apostille where necessary;
-
Organizing translation or notarial preparation;
-
Preparing the certificate for international use;
-
Arranging international courier delivery of the original document.
These stages can often be coordinated while you remain abroad, without a trip to Italy solely for the certificate.
The process is built around the record required for your particular application rather than a generic “police certificate.”
Once the necessary formalities are complete, international courier delivery of the completed original can be arranged to your destination.
